Carey was almost 5'10 tall when she became a high-end model. Her popularity among American designers Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was high. In 1979 the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists elected her father Scientist of The Year. Carey was a frequent traveler because of her father's work. While in college, she began to model for a small amount of time and was able to attract the attention of Ford model Agency representatives in New York. In the year 1980, she emigrated to France and briefly lived in Paris and Bordeaux and then returned in New York in order to continue her modeling career. She appeared on Vogue and Glamour cover. She studied full-time in New York University, obtaining her degree in literature between modeling assignments. When she began studying acting at Neighborhood Playhouse, New York, her interest in the field grew. In 1986 she had her first performance as a small part in Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. She loves rock climbing as well as skiing and windsurfing.
